So Much Shouting, So Much Laughter
Ani DiFranco
|
The second double album from Ani in two years, and the second double
live album from her in five. The best introduction to Ani is to see
her live, which is exactly how I got hooked on her at the Santa Cruz
Civic six years ago. The second best intro is to listen to one of her
live albums, either this one or Living in Clip. It's all here:
the shrieking girls, Ani's stage banter, and of course her
music. So Much Shouting, So Much Laughter captures the jazzy
funky sound she has been cultivating on her tours for the last two
years, and it also includes a recording of the poem "Self Evident",
Ani's reaction to the September 11 terrorist attacks. It gives me
chills every time I hear it. Not unlike an actual live Ani show, I
found a few of my personal anthems on here ("Swan Dive" and "Dilate"),
new renderings and imaginative reworkings of older material, and
completely new songs. It will hold me until the next time she comes
'round.
