Mellow Gold

Take a moment and try to remember where you were the first time you
heard "Loser." I sure can't. It's been blocked out by the 50,602
other times I heard that damn song in 1994 alone. But I listen to it
again now and my jaw goes a little slack all over again. That's a
good thing, in case you were wondering. Beck's freewheeling lyrics
remind me of Santa Cruz sunshine and the smell of pot drifting across
the lawn. "Pay No Mind (Snoozer)" takes a fairly typical folk tune
(complete with harmonica interlude), injects it with scenes of urban
decay, and sets it free to run screaming down the street. Sheer
brilliance. Someday someone will call me their "Nitemare Hippy Girl,"
and they will have my heart.
