The Three E.P.'s
The Beta Band
|
You know that scene in High Fidelity where John Cusack puts on the
Beta Band and everyone in the store instantly starts nodding their heads
in time to the music and generally looks much happier than they did five
seconds before? This is the power of the Beta Band. Truly. That song,
"Dry the Rain," opens this album, and by three minutes in you will be
utterly hypnotized and begging for more. And more you shall receive, in
the form of gems like "Dogs Got a Bone," a gentle singalong accompanied
by bongoes and what sounds like a melodica, and "She's the One." "It's
Over" features a bass line plucked out on an upright bass and lazily
rapped-out lyrics that shifts into utter fantasia complete with tinkling
xylophone and bird calls. Leave it to a bunch of white guys from Scotland
to make some of the more engaging trip-hop around these days.
