Love Is Here
Starsailor
|
No-nonsense Britpop with melodies so carefully beautiful they're apt
to cause pain. It took me a few listens to get past the melodrama
(Starsailor is really just a few hairs shy of camp), but now I don't
raise an eyebrow when frontman James Walsh cuts loose on a chorus with
a voice full of agony and emotion. Album opener "Tie Up My Hands" is
a simple little tune about the complexities of thwarted love, while
"Alcoholic" is as rife with dark feeling and tinkling piano as you
would expect from a song with that name. To me "Good Souls" is an
almost-perfect synthesis of the last ten years of British indie
rock. An excellent first album. Where to next, boys?
