My Name Is Albert Ayler
Albert Ayler
Powerful avant-garde jazz. This recording of a 1963 Copenhagen session starts with a short vocal track from Ayler himself, a wonderful way to begin before he launches directly into the scorcher "Bye Bye Blackbird". Ayler is on soprano sax for this first track, but then plays tenor for the rest of the album. I think my favorite cut here is "Summertime", just because I love the song in its original form as much as I love to hear it played with and deconstructed. This might be a challenging album if you've never heard free jazz before, though it's also an excellent place to start. Ayler was one of the visionaries.
