I've had an itch for soul recently, and Rahsaan Patterson scratches
it quite nicely. This 1999 album is luscious from start to finish.
"It's Alright Now" with its opening of gentle strings is a
straightforward ballad about overcoming heartbreak that never
descends into sappiness, and strings are used again to great effect on
"Friend Of Mine" as Patterson sings about betrayal in a tune that
seems to be from another era entirely. Patterson has earned more than
one comparison to Stevie Wonder, though there are enough modern
touches on Love In Stereo to keep me interested (I think I'm
sadly lacking the Stevie Wonder gene). There haven't been any new
releases from Patterson since this album came out, while other lesser
talents churn out albums by the bucketload. I hope he's working
behind the scenes somewhere making bank.
