Bring It On
Gomez
|
A birthday present from Carol, more fuel for my Britpop obsession.
This is one of those debut albums from which a band finds it hard to
recover because it's just so good. Gomez distinguish themselves by
taking on a more bluesy sound than I'm used to hearing from across the
pond, though a song like "Whippin' Piccadilly" is straight-up
addictive pop. "78 Stone Wobble" starts out with the sound of a
needle scratching on a record before the acoustic guitar kicks in and
one of the group's three talented vocalists starts drawling out the
lyrics, while "Get Myself Arrested" lazily funks around for a bit
until the chorus whacks you with full sing-along effect. I hear the
influence of Beck's earlier stuff in the harmonies and acoustic work
on this album, though the sometimes-raw sound is reminiscent of
Pavement as well.
