All Over the Place
Bangles
|
As far as '60s-derived pop and delicious girl-voice harmonies go, it
just doesn't get much better than All Over the Place. It's
unfortunate that my exposure to the Bangles growing up consisted of
stuff like "Eternal Flame" and "Walk Like an Egyptian," because this
album is much more intelligent (though still plenty of fun). "Hero
Takes a Fall" is an arrow straight to the heart of '80s pop hell,
while "Dover Beach" brings a tear to my eye every time Susanna Hoffs
sings "If I had the time I would run away with you" and conjures up
romantic escape fantasies on par with Ani DiFranco's "Gravel." The
cover of Kimberly Rew's "Going Down to Liverpool" is similarly sublime
in its melancholy, mixing catchy guitar with plaintive vocals. I
think the thing that I like most about this album is that the Bangles
have no illusions about conveying some big message with their music;
they're just a group of women doing what they do best and rocking out.
