Orbital 2
Orbital

This album's release date of 1992 makes it seriously old-school
electronica to the candy ravers of today, but it sure sounds good to
my tired ears. The minimalist sound reminds me of Kraftwerk, though
with Orbital the music is always moving forward, going somewhere new.
"Planet of the Shapes" begins with fairly straightforward sampling
and percussion before an otherworldly flute is added to the mix,
while "Lush 3-1" has a darker, more trancey sound that is again
infected by a lilting melody over the top. The vocal sample on
"Impact (The Earth Is Burning)" always makes me feel vaguely turned
on, though the track is really more goofy than sexy. And you can't
have been to a rave in the past ten years without getting a little
thrill down the spine at the opening strains of the anthem "Halcyon
+ On + On." Orbital make music that has the elegance and
beauty of a good mathematical proof.
