Eureka
Jim O'Rourke
|
The fact that there is nothing but gorgeous pop on this album totally
surprised me. I was expecting all kinds of experimental craziness
from Jim O'Rourke, but instead he delivers pretty melody and rich
instrumentation. On the sweeping opening track "Prelude to 110 or
220/Women of the World" alone there is a veritable smorgasbord of
sound created by (among other things) cello, viola, violin, organ,
guitar, piano, drums, and bells. "Ghost Ship in a Storm" features
some lovely ba-ba-bas and a French horn break, and by the time you get
to the unapologetically kitschy cover of Bacharach and David's
"Something Big" you're ready to start shimmying across the room with a
glass of champagne. Just be careful not to offend any of your more
conservative coworkers with the cover art (or the awesome Ma Sekiguchi
poster included as the CD booklet).
