The Solitary Life of a Maverick Naturalist. This is a lyrical and
beautifully-written book, but unfortunately one bad line sticks out
in my head: "Probably our child would be born when I would not be
home." Ultimately Kaufman does choose his dream of life in the North
Carolina woods over his marriage, but to his credit he designs his
simple house with a room for his daughter in mind. Kaufman's account
of his search for balance with nature is an engrossing one, and his
ideals are worthy of recognition, even if he compromises most of them
along the way. Me, I would have trouble dealing with the snakes.
