A Christmas present from Brent. This is a stunningly good little
book. Emshwiller takes your typical science fiction story of alien
invasion and subjugation of humans and crafts it into a riveting tale
of a young man, Charley, who is proud to be the chosen Mount for his
Little Master, the Future-Ruler-Of-Us-All. When the wild humans who
are plotting revolt against the ruling Hoots liberate Charley, he is
unable to enjoy his freedom and instead longs to be a Mount
again. Just to complicate things, he's about to hit puberty. I was
so engrossed in the world that Emshwiller creates that I never wanted
to put this book down. In that way it reminded me a lot of the
fantasy I used to read when I was younger, especially Diana Wynne
Jones, the stuff that really electrified my brain. So I urge you to
pick it up too.
