Wednesday night Aimee and I made the Grand Lake our theater of choice
because they currently have a huge "NO WAR FOR OIL" notice on their
marquee. We saw Catch Me If You Can, Spielberg's thoroughly
enjoyable Leonardo DiCaprio vehicle, which is worth seeing if only for
the opening titles and for the accurate depiction of Pan Am
stewardesses as the most beautiful women in the world. I had
forgotten how much I enjoy DiCaprio onscreen, and even Tom Hanks is
great in one of his grouchy roles. The ending had the requisite
Spielberg cheese, but it's almost tolerable if you're expecting
it. Can I wait to see Leo play Alexander the Great in the next Baz
movie? No, no I cannot.
Otherwise my extracurricular activities this week were a little sparse
thanks to the start of my precalculus class and a 6-hour church
officer's retreat at the Marin Headlands. I did manage to make it out
to the Pound SF Saturday night for the Magic Glasses party. At one
point I was trying to take a break on a couch but my extremities kept
going numb from the pounding bass. I know for a fact that there had
been a heavy metal show at the club the previous night, so just add
string art, blinky lights, and cowboy hats, and voila! Instant rave.
Just before the party I'd twisted my head a little with a viewing of
Do the Right Thing, which is without question way up there
among the many Spike Lee movies I love. In a day and age when our
leaders are urging us to see everything in black and white (no pun
intended, honestly), it is good to remember that things are never that
simple. Embrace complexity, think creatively. I took a lot of
pleasure in watching how Lee sets up the conflicts, and I always enjoy
what he does with his camera. Does Mookie do the right thing? Damned if I know
.
Finally, and I know you care deeply about this, all systems are go for
my spring trip to New York. Steph is moving out there, and I have to
make sure she doesn't get too lonely right away (hello crash
space). I'm still deciding whether or not I want to see Ground Zero,
but I do know I'm rooting for the United Architects proposal for the
redesign of the WTC site. In fact, all of the designs are pretty cool
with the exception of the Meier Eisenman Gwathmey Holl, which is
downright hateful.
